Policy achievements

McDermott said that when he helped craft the basic health plan in Washington state in the late 1980s, it didn't include mental health. Now, the state has greater mental health insurance provisions than the federal government. If an employer with more than 50 employees offers physical health insurance, it must also offer mental health insurance on par with the physical health benefits under the laws passed by the legislature in the last 10 years.
