Struggling with responsibility

McDermott said that he was privileged to retrace Martin Luther King Jr.'s pilgrimage to India with Rep. John Lewis and Martin Luther King IV, and recalled that Gandhi said that you have to be the change you want to see in the world.

But “being the change you want to see in the world is not easy,” McDermott said.

“A part of us struggles with whether we want to be responsible” for others McDermott added. “All of us struggle with not wanting to see what we see. Then we find ourselves involved with having to help someone, and being enmeshed in the system.”
