The value of peer counseling

Patrick Ciminera says that by practicing "good stress," he's able to overcome some of his continuing issues. Good stress, he says, means practicing activities you enjoy and gets you out into the community. He volunteers at a climbing gym, has driven a snow bus for kids attending Outdoors For All.

He said that being a peer counselor means facilitating those types of activities for others. One person he's worked said that nothing was fun anymore since they quit crack, so Ciminera was able to help find an activity that person enjoyed: fishing, despite not ever having done it before.

What makes a peer counselor a good resource?

"Having someone there that has no judgment, and that changes a lot," Ciminera said.
