Being Honest

When her daughter, Linea, was in the hospital because of her bipolar disorder, Cinda Johnson said she made the decision to be honest about the reason for her daughter's hospital stay. She said she didn't want Linea to feel ashamed of her problems. This "coming out" also put Cinda in the position to help colleagues were going through similar problems.

"I'm not hiding this anymore," Cinda said.

C.R. Douglas asked whether Cinda's honesty was potentially harming to Linea, for fear that Linea would be labeled "the girl with bipolar disorder." Linea, however, wanted her story to be told. Linea said that while she was at Harborview she decided to be a voice for others who didn't have one.

Linea said people often said that she didn't look like someone with a mental illness. To which she replied: "What would that look like?"

Those with mental illnesses come in all forms with varying levels of affliction.
