Problems with Lithium

Revelle was asked about the side effects of long term use of Lithium. Many said that they try to taper off over time.

Revelle said that he faces the choice between kidney damage and the prospect of dialysis by continuing on Lithium, or risk the return of the episodes that Lithium has prevented. He said his doctor says that three quarters of Lithium patients as advanced as Revelle is have no trouble going off Lithium, but they risk not being able to return to the medication if the episodes return.

Revelle says that he's already made his choice: continued lithium treatment and the prospect of kidney dialysis.

"If I get those episodes back, I will have lost my life," he said.
