Saturday Keynote Address

The second day of the Thomas C. Wales Foundation Symposium on Mental Health in Our Community is about to begin at Mary Gates Hall on the campus of the University of Washington with a keynote address by Congressman Jim McDermott, who is serving his eleventh term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Trained as a psychiatrist, McDermott has been especially interested in health care issues during his public service. He crafted the Washington Basic Health Plan, the first state program in the country to provide low-cost health insurance to the unemployed and working poor. In Congress, he founded and chairs the Congressional Task Force on International HIV/AIDS and championedthe AIDS Housing Opportunities Act. He was also a co-author of a major single payer health care proposal.
